Lipids - Coggle Diagram
Lipids
-
Triglycerides
-
when triglycerides join together the carboxyl groups interact forming three water molecules and bonds between the fatty acids and the glycerol molecule
-
-
when a triglyceride is broken down, three water molecules are needed to reverse the reaction (hydrolysis reaction)
-
-
sterols
Also known as a steroid alcohol, they are another type of lipid found in cells
-
-
an example of a sterol is cholesterol which has an important role in cell membranes positioned inbetween the cell membrane
Phospholipids
-
Modified triglycerides
have extra electrons, so they are negatively charged making them soluble in water
-
phospholipids have a non-polar hydrophobic fatty acid tail but have a charged hydrophilic phosphate head
-
-
Identification of lipids
-
it is performed by mixing the sample with ethanol, then shaken, if a white emulsion is formed on the surface then a lipid is present
