Original investigation: The aim of this investigation is to explore the relationship between memory and emotion
Extraneous variables
The largest apparent extraneous variable that could have impacted the experiment is the individual memory capacity of each of the participants.
-
The amount of time between each word varied, due to the varying lengths of the descriptions.
-
Sample
- 36 Glenunga International High School students
- Split into three groups
- Part of a Year 11 Psych class
Limitations
The sample size is not representative of the general public and there were not enough participants to get a proper scope of the people.
There was a very limited age range amongst the group
Strengths
Groups were randomly picked. As well as this, the sample was varied in gender, age and ethnicity
Ethics
All the information was confidential, and there was no way to trace who said what
-
Participants were able to leave at any time if they felt uncomfortable with the content of the experiment
Investigation design - QO, Quantative Objective
Advantages
Since the design was Quantative, the results were recorded in the form of numbers and therefore able to be made into a graph. This also meant that the results were very straightforward.
Objective data also reduces the chance of bias in the results
-
Method
Validity
Strengths
- The method collected the data it was meant to
- The method protected the identity of the participants
Limitations
- There are many extraneous variables that could have impacted the results, such as the individual memory capacity of the participants, as well as the impact of time between word on the ability to recall
Reliability
Limitations
- Participants could have possibly misunderstood where they were meant to put all of their data
- Participants could lie about their results
- Participants could cheat by looking at other peoples answers
Strengths
- There is not much room for inaccuracy and it is quite straightforward
