Concept Map-Reproductive System-Ruben J. Mora
Major functions of the Reproductive system
Male sex cells is sperm
Female sex cells is oocytes
They develop and maintains organs for production of offspring.
Male system delivers sperm to female
Female system houses and nourishes developing embryo and fetus
Female reproductive system deliver feed and nurute offspring
Anatomy of female reproductive structures
Near ovaries unterin tubes expand to form an infundibulum with fingerlike finbrae... these draw the eggs released from ovaries into fallopian tubes
UTERUS; is a hollow muscular organ which recives ebryo from uterine tube, and maintans the embryo then the fetus
Uterine tubes AKA fallopian tubes; lead from the ovary to the uterus. This is the normal site of fertilization.
Vagina is partially coverd by a membrane called the hymen. It conveys uterine secretion, recives the penis during sex, and serves as burthing canal.
Females have a certain amount of primordial follicles, and dont produce anymore in thier lifetime.
Labia Majora; encloses and protect other external reproductive organs.
Primary sex organs are the ovaries. They produce the sex cells and hormones.
Labia minora; flattened longitudinal folds btwn the labia majora, form hood around the clit
Clitoris; Corresponds to the penis and has a similar strucute it produces pleasure
Vestiblule; Correspond to bulbourethral glands and provide lubrication
Hormones of the reproductive system
Male Sex hormones;
Testosterone is the main male sex hormone. It stimulates development of male reproductive organs and responsible for male sexual characteristics.
Sperm cell sturcture; head; contains nucleus and acrosome. Body contains mitochondria, and a tail called flagellum which provides movement
At time of puberty the hypothalamus controls many changes that lead to the development of re productivity functional adult. DnRH is released by the hypothalamus
FSH and testosterone stimulate spermogenisis
Female Sex hormones;
At time of puberty the hypothalamus controls many changes that lead to the development of re productivity functional adult. GnRH is released by the hypothalamus
FSH is released from anterior pituitary and causes ovaries to enlarge.
LH also secreted form anteior pituitary triggers ovulation, if the oocyte is not ferilized within hours of its release, it will degenerate
Estrogen is the main hormone releaseed by ovaries when not preganant. Responsible for female secondary sexual characteristics.
Progesterone is responsibleuterine changes durring the menstral cycle.
Anatomy of male reproductive structures
Only body system that person does not need to survive.
The epidiymis continues into the vas defferens which unites swith the semial vesical duct.
Another organ testis are associated with is the
seminal vesicle.
When Ductus deferens unites with seminal vesical duct it empties into the ejaculatory duct. The ejaculatory duct travels through prostate gland and to urethra.
Channels leading from the testes carry sperm to the
epididymis
(SITE OF SPERM MATURATION), which continues into the
ductus deferens AKA vas deferrens
The primary sex organ is the
testes
; they produce sperm and hormones and are suspended by the spermatic cord outside the trunk in a sac, the scrotum.
Anatomy and order of semen passageway of semen
Foreskin of penis is called prepuce
The tip of the penis is called the glans penis when stimulated it is lubricated.
Durring emission, seminal vesicles secrete a fluid that makes up a large portion of semen, which helps regulate ph in vagina
Menstral cycle
The corpus lutem degenerats to form a scar, or corpus albicans.
FSH causes ovaries to enlarge.
Following ovulation, the granulosa cells divide rapidly and enlarge to form corpus lutuem.
GNRH secretion from the hypothalamus causes secretion of FSH and LH from the anterior pituitary
During ovulation, the secondary oocyte is released from the ovary
FSH stimulates the maturation of a follicle in the ovary
Just before ovulation, the primary oocyte xompletes meiosis 1 , creating a secondary oocyte.
LH stimulates cell to produce testosterone precursosrs, which can be converted into estrogens in the ovary
Before birth primary oocytes become surrounded by a single layer careating a primoridial follicle.
Estrogens promote development of female secondary sexual characteristics as a female matures
Disorders associated with the reproductive system
AIDS:chronic, potentially life-threatening condition caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). By damaging your immune system, HIV interferes with your body's ability to fight infection and disease
Scabies;an itchy skin condition caused by a tiny burrowing mite called Sarcoptes scabiei. Intense itching occurs in the area where the mite burrows. The urge to scratch may be especially strong at night.
Trichomoniasis;caused by a parasite. In women, trichomoniasis can cause a foul-smelling vaginal discharge, genital itching and painful urination. Men who have trichomoniasis typically have no symptoms.
HPV/Genital Warts;genital warts appear clustered as a few small, raised lesions, but their appearance varies. They can be flesh-colored, light and pearly, or dark purple, gray, or brown.
Crabs/Pubic Lice; They are tiny, flat, light-brown parasites that stick to pubic hair and suck blood for nourishmen
PID: Infection of a woman reproductive system whihcg results in inflammation.
Gonorrhea;infection caused by a sexually transmitted bacterium that infects both males and females. Gonorrhea most often affects the urethra, rectum or throat. In females, gonorrhea can also infect the cervix. Gonorrhea is most commonly spread during vaginal, oral or anal sex
Bacterial Vaginosis;Too much of certain bacteria in vahina. Changes the normal balance of bacteria in vagina.
Chlamydia;a common sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by bacteria
Genital Herpes;caused by a herpes simplex virus (HSV). It can cause sores on your genital or rectal area, buttocks, and thighs. You can get it from having vaginal, anal, or oral sex with someone who has it
Syphilis; bacterial infection usually spread by sexual contact. The disease starts as a painless sore — typically on the genitals, rectum or mouth. Syphilis spreads from person to person via skin or mucous membrane contact with these sores
Methods and Classification of contraceptives
Fertility awarness; Monitor feritliy signs and obtain or use condoms
Withdrawl; Withdrawl of penis from vahina before ejaculation occurs
External condom; Olaced over penis for sex
Spermicides; Treatment to kill sperm cells placed in vagina
Internal condom; Place in vagina when having sex
Diaphragm: placed in vagina with spermicide when having sex
Pill; taken by month everyday to prevent pregancy
Injectables; shot in arm every 3 months which tricks body into thinking that you are pregnant
IUD:placed inside uterus and prevents preganancy by scrapping the wall of uterus.
Male sterilization; Is a permant procedure is cutting the vas defferens
Female sterilization:Getting uterine tubes tied and it is a permant procedure.
Events of the female hormonal cycles
When estrogen and progesterone levels fall, the secretion of FSH and LH increases and a next follicl will start to mature
Menstral bleeding is cosidered the first day of the next menstral ccle.
Following ovulation follicular cells turn into a glandular corpus lutem
Ovulation is triggered by a surge in LH
Follicle matures fully by about day 14 of the cyle and is ready for maturation
Estrogens promote development of female secondary secual charateristics asa female matures.
LH stim. follicle to release egg
FSH stim. the maturation of a follicle in the ovary
GNRH secretion from the hypothalamus causes secretion fo FSH and LH from the anterior pituitary
