Definition
Definition: Burn is the injury caused to the tissue due to chemical, heat, radiation and electric current
-
Incidence
-
In winter the common; Scald is the major burning case; which is the burn with wet heat eg hoe water above 60 degree C
5 lakhs burns cases presented in US each year, 40,000 are admitted and 4000 are die
-
Classification
-
Causative factor
thermal burn; it is the commonest type of burn that is caused by any burning agent, can be dry heat or wet. example; flames or wet heat
Chemical burns: It can be acid, alkali and organic compounds. Acid is a house hazard that can include hydrochloric acid, hydrofluoric acid and oxalic acid. Now managing the burn with alkali is more harder because it take the tissue fluid the time to neutralize with the alkali. And it adheres to the tissue causing protein hydrolysis. this compounds includes drain cleanser, industrial cleanser and fertilizer. Most common one are; phenol- drain cleaner and petroleum that is the gasoline
-
Smoking and inhalation injury: It is the inhalation of the hot air or the noxious chemical. it Mainly affects the upper respiratory tract and on the lower respiratory tract it tends to cool down and get to the normal body temperature . Furthermore, they the vocal cords and the glottis helps in providing a defense mechanism to prevent the tissue damage of the kidney.
Risk
Above the glottis injury; Mainly affects the oropharynx and the larynx. clinical manifestation is the swelling and redness. the edema can over time grow causing obstruction of the airway. therefore it is a emergency that requires immediate care.
Below the glottis injury; Occurs with the chemical inhalations. it cause pulmonary edema but the symptoms are shown late and can easily transition to ARDS with the symtoms.
- Carbon monoxide poisonings and asphyxia ; Carbon monoxide is the result of the incomplete combustion of the burning process. the CO will replace the oxygen in the haemoglobin, causing carboxyheamoglubinimia, hypoxia and death. this occurs when the CO covers 20 percent of the body. in severe cases the red flag of cheery red skin appears.
