The perfect tenses are always formed with the auxiliary to have and the verb in the past participle: the auxiliary 'to have' is always conjugated in the present (to form the present perfect), in the past (to form the past perfect) or in the future (to form the future perfect), and then the main verb is added.
The past perfect is used to refer to an action that happened in the past before another. In this case, the first action is conjugated in the past perfect, while the second, the most recent, in the simple past.
