THE BEGINNING OF HIS REIGN
When he went to Castilla in 1517
He didn't speak spanish
So they feared they would lose their power
And Castilla's riches would be assigned to other territories
This upset the Castilian nobility, who viewed the monarch as a foreigner
Castilla was in economic crisis
And Carlos used the taxes to finance his appointment as Holy Roman Emperor
This provoked the Revolt of the Comuneros
In which the lower nobility
And bourgeoisie
rose up against the government
The king defeated comuneros
At the battle of Villalar 1521

The bourgeoise and peasants rose against nobility in Valencia and Mallorca
Known as the revolt of Brotherhoods (1519-1523)
Also the Agermanados
Were groups of humble citizens that were allowed to arm themselves
to defend their coastal cities against pirate attacks
As they were abused by nobility
they organised an armed revolt to improve their economic conditions
and attain political rights
The uprising was suppressed
By the nobles with the support of the king

This kingdom was surrounded by Carlos V's territories
They have several wars
The first one, the French king was defeated at the Battle of Pavia 1525
Carlos conquered the Duchy of Milan
In the other wars
King of France did alliances with the pope
And German princes
Against the German Protestant princes
Carlos V
Fought the protestant princes
In the Schmalkaldic war 1546-1547
And defeated them in Mülberg
The hostilities resumed in 1552
Because Carlos V signed the Peace of Augsburg in 1555
Against the Ottoman Empire
Suleiman the Magnificent
Began to expand his empire
In 1529 he attacked Vienna but the city resisted
The Turk Barbarossa controlled the Western Mediterranean from Algiers
The Emperor conquered Tunisia
But failed to take Algiers
