COLD AND HOT WATER SUPPLY SYSTEM IN A BUILDING
COLD WATER SUPPLY SYSTEM IN A BUILDING
Types Of Cold Water System
Direct Water Supply System
Water is supplied direct from
mains to fixtures
Disadvantages
There is a danger of rotten water from the sanitary equipment sucked back into the main water.
During peak periods there is a tendency to lower pressure
If there is a mains, there is no water storage
Advantages
saving in pipe work especially in multistory buildings.
Fresh Drinking water may be obtained at any point
Indirect Water Supply System
Water going to overhead tank and then the water is supplied to different floors by gravity.
Disadvantages
A larger storage cistern is necessary
Longer pipe runs are required
Advantages
There is no tendency of pipe bursting due
to the low pressure in the pipe work
There is no risk of back siphon age
with this system

INTRODUCTION
Uses of hot water
Domestic use – cooking, heating, cleaning, bathing and space heating
Commercial /industrial use – café, restaurant, hotel factory using steaming
Medical use – hospital, operation theater & surgery
TYPES OF HOT WATER SYSTEM
Solar heating system
Water heated by the use of solar energy.
Composed of solar thermal collectors, a water storage tank, interconnecting pipes and a fluid system to move the heat from the collector to the tank.
Solar collector typically 3-6m2 in area
Standard package with appliances
Disadvantages
The initial cost of purchasing a solar system is fairly high
Uses a Lot of Space
Associated with Pollution
Advantages
Savings- no electric bills
Safety - No gas leak
Convenient - Rain or shine
product pays for itself
Electrical heating system
Tank-less Water System
Advantages
Unlimited hot water
Less Physical space
Reduced risk of water damage
Long term energy savings
Disadvantages
Start-up delay
No operation with low pressure
Storage systems
Advantages
High flow rates
Power shower capability
Low maintenance costs
Disadvantages
Pre heat hot water needed.
Hot water require recovery time.
Storage space needed.
COMPARISON OF ELECTRICAL WATER HEATER & SOLAR WATER HEATER
solar
Cheaper annual costs
Less electricity bill
Electrical
Greater annual costs
Increase electricity bill
•Is the art and technique of installing pipes, fixtures & other
apparatuses in buildings & for bringing the water supply, liquids, &
removing them
