And didn't invest in production
The population became poorer
Craft industry
grow due to an ↑ in demand from American
Rise in prices made Spanish products more expensive
So was cheaper to buy them abroad
Monarchs, able to begin expensive projects
When their resources ran out
They resorted to increasing taxes
Collected from the peasants & the bourgeoisie
Privileged classes didn't have to pay them
Economy
continued to be based on agriculture
Population became vulnerable when harvests were bad

Spanish economy went into decline
Only small local craft industries could survive
That supplied the limited domestic demand
The major industries couldn't compete with those from abroad
Also afected trade
Fewer raw materials were bought/sold
The number of products manufactured decreased
Affected society
People who had to beg to survive increased
People joined the clergy to escape poverty
THE RELIGIOUS WARS
Monarchs exert absolute political authority in Europe
And pursued similar political objectives
To defend Catholicism
Took measures to preserve religious unity
Their domestic policy continued to be
discriminatory
Who questioned Catholicism were repressed
They published the Index of forbidden books
Resorted to using the concept "limpieza de sangre"
To prevent the conversos from
Gaining access to public positions
Outside Spain
They waged (began) religiously motivated wars
Against the Protestant states
To retain their territorial patrimony
They did it through numerous wars
Became indebted to Italian/German bankers
Riches from the Americas were not sufficient
To finance their foreign policies
They maintained/expanded the administrative system
Established by the Catholic Monarchs
Consisted of different councils
In the 16th century
Spanish Monarchy became the most powerful in Europe
1516 to 1556
Carlos I/V reigned
1556 to 1598
Felipe II took over the throne
Both monarchs belonged to the
Habsburg dynasty
