Definition of Mutations
-
Individuals showing these mutations are known as mutants. Factors of agents causing mutations are known as mutagents
A mutant individual showing an altered phenotype is known as variant. Generally mutant alleles are recessive to their wild or normal type of alleles

Tissue of origin
Somatic mutations
Somatic mutations is when mutations pass from progeny to another in asexually reproducing species. These mutations occur in the somatic cell.
Germinal Mutation
Germinal mutations are the mutations which are transmitted to the coming generation. These mutations occur in gametic/reproductive cells.
Causes of Mutations
Spontaneous mutation
Spontaneous mutation are naturally occuring mutations without any cause. The rate of the spontaneous mutation tends to be very slow.
Induced Mutation
Induced mutations are mutations occuring due to treatment with chemical or physical agents. These agents which are capable of inducing such mutations are known as mutagens. The use of induced mutations for crop improvement is known as mutation breeding
