Positive Outlook & Memory Practical
Variables
Independent
Weaknesses
Varying contents in each clip will result in participants gettting distracted from their regular “routine” of remembering certain things and recalling information.
The descriptive words could result in participants focusing on words used to describe instead of words required to be remembered.
The duration of audio clips will cause group members to be finishing at varying times, causing some to get distracted by others completion.
Strengths
The same can be said about the contents in each audio clip, with it indicating whether the more contents such as describing a word assists in recalling information.
The duration changes gives an indicator to what length is optimal for this certain set of data.
Dependent
Weaknesses
As stated in the investigation report, people with higher musical confidence, associate with these music-related words more easily
In relation to this, some words are easier to remember than others, such as remembering "melody" or "symphony" than an easier word like "band" or "horn"
As the data being received is quantitative, the data will not be able to display participants' opinions on these words and other information such as methods used to recall information
Strengths
With the musical confidence being measured, this can be associated with other data to identify whether this has an influence on the data.
Due to the data being measurable, this allows research to be generalised, being able to be displayed in graphs with numerical data.
Extraneous
Weakness
When recalling the words, each timer begins at different times, which could result in slight errors in data received
The descriptions of the words could cause participants to get distracted from the word required to be remembered
Sounds occurring outside of these clips distract the participant by preventing them from focusing on the words required to be remembered. Evident with some participants remembering those words instead of the required ones.
Some students also didn't complete the investigation in class which could result in errors/weaknesses only evident in the environment they were in.
Method
Strengths
The participant is able to keep track of the timer, informing them when the experiment is over.
Weaknesses
When participants begins the 1 minute timer to recall words, this induces stress and makes the participants feel under pressure and can distract them from remembering information
The participant has to manually start the one minute timer, resulting in a time gap between those two steps.
Materials
Weaknesses
As this is online, it is solely dependent on the internet connection the participant has and can affect their experience when hearing the words.
Audio not playing for some participants, or device not working, resulting in other methods having to be taken.
Strengths
As the experiment is online, the data and resources can easily be accessible by participants
Headphones reduces but not all the sound outside of the clips, allowing participants to focus on the audio clips
Design
Stengths
As this was done online, results could not be adjusted after the experiment as these changes could be seen by everyone, making it evident when these changes were made.
Weaknesses
As participants were split into groups randomly, everyone had to start the timer individually and as stated prior, this results in participants feeling under pressure.
Although some confidentiality was hidden, identities of each data set could be found by viewing changes of the document.
With everyone conducting the investigation being in one room, this could result in participants getting distracted by others finishing before them.
Sample Size
Weaknesses
This reduces the reliability of the investigation with, again, it only being a small selection of students.
As well as this, a higher variability is present, possibly leading to a bias in some results. This links with some students having higher musical confidence.
The sample size used in this investigation only showcases a small percentage and selection of this year level.
Strengths
Due to factors such as musical confidence being recorded, data that has scored higher can be related to their musical confidence rating
Information such as musical confidence and age in months was recorded after the groups were made, resulting in the groups being completely random, removing any bias involved.
