Abnormality
Example: treating and management impulse control disorder and non-substance addictive disorder.
strength : High validity
example ( validity ) : In Grant et al ( 2008 ) used a double -blind trial to examine how individual responded to biochemical ( drugs) form of treatment
this increase the validity of study is because neither the experimenter nor participants knew which drug or placebo they will be receiving .
this reduce the possibility of researcher bias and increased the validity of the result.
strength : quantitative data
example ( quantitative data )text : the data collected through Y-BCOS to asses the severity of gambling severity
quantitative data is a objective measurement whereby it allow researcher easy to compare the result
-Y-bocs provide standardized result through calculation which this help to eliminate researcher's opinion and affect the result of the study
case study ( covert sensitisation )
example : in Glover et al ( 2011 ) involve only one kleptomania patient - 56 year old woman
cause of kleptomania : after her husband was convicted of embezzlement and finding difficult to forgive him and become reluctantly depressed, compulsive thought of shoplifting behaviour was implanted
treatment : muscle relaxation therapies to relieve tension within the body and mind. After 19 months , covert sensitation can be used effectively to reduce symptoms of klpetomania.
case study was beneficial to be used as treatment as the whole therapy only involve one patient and the phycologist can find the causes and design a treatment particularly to the individual patient.
weakness : low in generalbilisation ( case study )
since in case study only involve an individual patient , the treatment might not be effective too to others ( larger population group of people ) who might have the same symptoms
weakness : reductionist
reductionist is when a psychologist believes that a complex behaviour can be explained by reducing it to one single cause or series of component parts.
in the biochemical treatment , the use of opiates has shown effectively manage the symptoms of impulse control disorder, however the phychologists has ignore the circumstance in a person's life which may have triggered the problem behaviour in the first place
