Industrial Revolution
Sci-fi/Travel
Romanticism
Edgar Allan Poe
Criticised scientist Alexander von Humboldt in Eureka
The universe was seen by scientists as a formal template
Poe refuted it, saying the universe was:
Object of research
Finite
It came about from the radiation of atoms from a single particle
Newton's law of gravity was nothing more than the attraction between all atoms.
"Poetic thinking involves both observing and emulating the movements of the natural world."
Rejects the idea that everything is explained rationally
Used many events to try to disprove Newtonian gravity, or say it was only partially correct
Rejected Kepler's and Newton's theories
Could he be afraid that everything was explained by reason?
Then he would have many not answered questions which could be unberable
Jules Vernes
Father of Science Fiction
Created a story of a trip to the moon
Used theories from scientists to make his story as accurate as possible
Galileo
Newton
Kepler
Laws of motion and gravity to calculate time and speed of the projectile
Lunar Light
Singular opinion in formation of circles and planetary motion
Different from Poe
Accepted and used scientific theories
Main Takeaway
My main takeaway from this class is that after the industrial revolution, many new tools and techs were created which allowed scientists to discover much more about our Universe and let both researchers and authors make really accurate predictions such as Jules Verne. Even though all these facts had irrefutable evidence, there were still some people that did not want to accept them, such as Poe, be it either because of religion or fear.
This completely assimilates to our current society, as, still today there are many people who refute believe in scientifically proven theories.
