How does conformity lead to negative behavioral changes in adolesence?
source; How does conformity influence your behavior
we all do things in order to feel accepted
conformity can be confused by manipulation
conformity can be referred to as a change in behavior influenced by an external factor
this influence can be a person or even maybe a group of people
they could conform because of pressure from their parents or peers
some of use chose to conform to feel a sense of acceptance to be part of a group
they do this because they want to go with the flow of things
many pyscologists believe that conformity is a social influence
there are to types of conformity influences; informational and normative influence
informational is when we conform so that we are correct and this happens because we might not know about a certain thing
Normative is when we conform because we dont want to be punished or ridiculed and this usually happens when we are younger
children often conform when they want an award
influential factors; size of the group, cultural differences, individual differences, level of difficulty, unknown area, etc
cultures who believe in collectivism tend to conform more than others
cultures can have an influence on you
source; how cultures make people conform
pressure to conform are a universal feature of culture
the idea of culture implies that people think feel and act similarly
“Cultues are more effective at maintaining and propagating themselves when they can get individuals to want to conform and to want to make other conform as well”
The acquisition of culture occurs before children have the intellectual power to ask pointed questions
source; the cultural evolutionary; trade-off of ritualistic synchrony
“Ritualistic synchrony –including synchronous dancing, singing, chanting, drumming, or marching– has been documented in every region of the world, and today it appears everywhere from choice to military parades, to pregrame rituals in rugby games”
Many experimental studies find that synchrony increases prosociality and cooperation compared to control condition
“Several studies have found tht synchrony can promote conformity, agressive, and destructive obedience”
“ studies on synchrony and conformity found that synchrony made people more liekly to copy majority opinions when selecting products rather than following their personal preferences”
source; young children conform more to Norms than to preferences
To become functioning members of a culture, children must learn about social reality
Children conform more to a method used by multiple individuals than to a method used by only one individual
“ the study examined children’s relative consideration of information about tules verses information about others preferences when predicting others behavior and mental states”
“ another study found that children improved with age at distinguishing between group norms and preferences.”
Author hypothesized” when young children perceive that a certain action is conventional within their cultural group, they will be motivated to perform that action simply out of desire to act conventionally –independent of other possible motives for performing that action.”
Cultural conformity denotes the agreement between a person's behavior and the standard determined by a group or a culture
Culture has a significant influence on levels of conformity achieved by asch-type conformity studies
One major reason is there is a sense of security when people adhere to certain behaviors
“ when conformity occurs because of fear, concern for one's social standing, or has dangerous consequences, it may be seen a negative.”
Not conforming helps us grow emotionally, physically, spiritually because we have our own free will to do our things
An example is that many cultures wearing clothing in public are expected behavior
source' the development of adaptive conformity in young children
conformist transmission is not to be confused with conformity
It is clear that young children are sensitive to whether or not they have received any information
There is good evidence that children can use a census to guide their decision making
Conformist transmission refers to the disproportionately large influence of majorities on an individuals decision making
“The probability that they adopt the majority decision is greater than the size of majority when considered as a proportion of the group of potential informants
“Certain findings show that young children are more reliant on the decisions of others when they feel uncertain and when informants are in agreement.”
source; conformity-the good,bad,and the ugly
Every action we do affects our society
“One of the main reasons people evolve and progress at such a fast rate is because we have always formed societies inwhich we were dependent on the other members”
“Sometimes we are pressured to conform even if its somethign we dont want”
“In a conformist society, people lose their individuality so that they can become accepted”
conformity forms a sort of comfort zone
Conformity create a change in behavior so that people in the same group behave the same way
source; culture and social development
Culture can be defined as “the set of attitudes, values, beliefs, and behaviors shared by a group of people communicated from one generation to the next”
Physical verbal and relational aggression have been identified as distinct entities in many cultures
Metanalysts have demonstrated that cultures characterized by collectivist value would generally show lower levels of aggression
“Friends are more often observed to engaged in more conflict than unfamiliar peers or more acquiantances”
source; developmental comparison of conformity across two cultures
source; science of sameness
Conformity can carry negative consequences
“They show that not conformity is not just a learned behavior but one that is innae and much more pronounce in humans”
Scientists are now investigating the brain process that drives conformity as well as deviation from it
These studies stand to uncover the neuroscience behind social deviation
