Substitution reactions
In a substitution reaction, one atom is swapped with another atom. This allows chemists to create new compounds. Alkanes undergo a substitution reaction with halogens in the presence of light.
-
Bromine test
The presence of a C = C bond in alkenes allows them to react differently compared to alkanes. Bromine water is an orange solution of bromine. Alkenes can decolourise bromine whereas Alkanes cannot when mixed together.
