P4 and P5
Sound
Infrasound
-
Used by elephants to communicate, by humans to detect earthquakes from seismometers and to find the composition of the Earth's core using P and S waves.
-
Sound travels at different speeds in different materials so the frequency and/or wavelength has to change. Sound has the same pitch either through air or solid therefore it is the wavelength and velocity that changes.
-
Lens
-
Diverging
It makes parallel light rays diverge and focal point located from where the rays seem to be coming from.
-
Power of a lens increases with thickness and curvature. The shorter the focal length the greater the power.
Ears and hearing
A sound wave causes changes in pressure on the surface of the solid causing particles in the solid to vibrate and so the disturbance is passed from the air to the solid.
The shape and properties (e.g. density and stiffness) affect how vibrations of different frequencies will affect it.
