Chapter 9
Knowledge
• A lot of the deaf culture have had a hard time with trying to deal with the obstacles that they face in their daily lives.
• The important information that this chapter is talking about is mainly trying to give more easier access to people who are deaf which included “close captioning, vibrating machines to let lights know someone is here, and making easier ways to call on the phone”
• There has been so much talk about how deaf people are not considered a superior race because they don’t have what a normal human being does which causes them to feel like nobody cares about the deaf community enough.
• It’s been happening around the world for a very long time. Even dating back to the native Americans when they took land in America to use sign language to communicate with each other.
Comphrension
From what I’ve read about this chapter I can tell that it’s basically a sum of the past and how much the deaf culture is changing for the better and how it is going to keep changing from here on out.
• The main idea for this chapter is basically understanding that even if you don’t have hearing or your not able to communicate with others that shouldn’t prevent u from not having a voice to share what is right and wrong.
Application
What a perfect example would be about this chapter particularly that a lot of people don’t understand why if something is already made for the public why do they have to wait to make it accessible for others later on.
• It’s significant because if there is so many places that are accessible to people with other disabilities why shouldn’t there be a place that’s universal instead of thinking of people that able to do things without any disability.
• I believe another instance for people do appreciate everything universal is people who understand what I means to be disabled and realize that there are things places have that can assist thought who aren’t unfortunate.
Analysis
• The parts and features that are in this chapter is when it is talking about how deaf people depend a lot on close captioning.
• There are also ways for deaf people to communicate over the phone using a machine called teletypewriter which allowed them to see what were they talking about and what they were trying to say.
• The one thing that compares and contrasts to this section is the fact that it’s all about how people in the deaf community are trying really hard to just live there lives normal even if they can’t hear.
Synthesis
• The one thing that I would like to infer on is that fact that back in the 1900’s people thought that being deaf meant it was a bad thing but at the time no many people had cared to much about deaf culture.
• I think the ideas that I would like to add onto would be to try and explain more about what other ways can people in the deaf community live at home just like a normal person can.
• If I were to create something new that would benefit others in the deaf community I would try to add LED signs in the house and whenever someone comes over or is on their way the person who is deaf would have a smart watch that is able to notify them when someone is approaching or on their way.
Evaluation
• I do agree that there needs to be more ways for people who are disabled or deaf to be able to enjoy things in life that other people can. Nobody should feel left out and nobody should feel any less just because they have a disability.
• I mostly think about how the deaf community has overcome so many obstacles in life that they are continuing to pursue and fight for others who do not have a voice.
• Most important thing to take away from this is the fact that if anybody should be privileged it would have to be the people who already have everything that not many others can have.
