Carlos I, Juana’s eldest son, inherited a vast patrimony
Isabella the Catholic died and her daughter Juana ascended the throne of Castilla
She was married to Felipe I Duke of Burgundy
Felipe died suddenly and Juana was declared unfit to govern due to an alleged mental illness
Castilla was experiencing an economic crisis and Carlos used the taxes collected to finance his appointment as Holy Roman Emperor
This create the Revolt of the Comuneros in 1520
King's representatives and the high nobility who supported him defeated the comuneros at the Battle of Villalar
The bourgeoisie and peasants rose up against the nobility in Valencia and Mallorca
This is known as the Revolt of the Brotherhoods
