Carlos V (Carlos I of Spain)
Reigned from 1516 to 1556
His son Felipe II
Took the throne from 1556 to 1598
Both monarchs belonged to the Habsburg dynasty
They pursed similar political objectives
To retain territorial patrimony through numerous wars
Riches obtained from Americas were not sufficient
To finance their foreign policies
They became indebted to Italian & German banks
To defend Catholicism
They took measures to preserve religious unity
Their domestic policy still being discriminatory
Out of Spain, they waged religiously motivated wars against Protestants
Economy & Society in the 16th century
Economy prospered
Due to the reaches obtained form the Americas
Especially silver and gold
Port of Sevilla monopolised trade
Consequently
Cities
Increased
Population
Felipe II organised a fleet system
To protect the ships from pirates
Some precious metals arrived to the Peninsula
This affected Spanish Monarchy in the following ways
Enabled kings to finance numerous wars
Enriched the Nobility
*majority of the population became poorer
Craft industry began tu grow and rised in prices
Monacrhs begin more expensive projects and increased taxes
Economy continued to be based on economy
At the end of 16th century
Spanish economy went into decline
This fall of production also affected trade
