Monetary aspects
Traditional growth models: Supply, demand, and patterns of production all contribute to the overall economic growth in a given society
Before an economy can "take off", it must meet certain conditions for growth (i.e. advancement of modern tech and sciences, trade and acquisition of assets), then it can successfully grow and develop
Once a society has entered the 'age of high mass consumption" there will increase welfare and security benefits for the general population.
This leads to the issue of how capital is acquired, which traditionally was through land ownership and use
Ricardo/Marx
Ricardo argues that land has "original and indestructible powers" beyond just what it can be used for
If all land were the same (same quantity and quality) there would be no use to charge rent since any given piece of land would not yield a particular advantage to the individual who cultivates it
However, since land does have different qualities it can be designated by people as useful or not useful, therefore making the concept of rent appealing to those who wish to capitalize further on their initial investment in the land
Rent is also built upon the concept that one section of society must produce the necessary goods/services for all of society
-
Surplus labor (labor supplied by the remainder of the working class) is what the concept of rent is built upon

Guiding question: Is sustainable development actually possible for human beings, or is it a mirage - or even a contradiction in terms?
