Vocabulary
The body of words known to an individual person.
Readers cannot understand what they are reading without knowing what most of the words mean.
Children who develop a rich vocabulary tend to be deeper thinkers, express themselves better and read more.
Fluency
The ability to read with speed, accuracy, and proper expression.
When reading aloud, fluent readers read in phrases and add intonation appropriately.
Reading fluency is important because it provides a bridge between word recognition and comprehension.
Comprehension
Comprehension is the understanding and interpretation of what is read.
To be able to accurately understand written material, students need to be able to decode what they read; make connections between what they read and what they already know; and think deeply about what they have read.
