Smart, Modern + Composite Materials
Composite Materials
A material which is made up of different materials to improve its properties
Concrete
Used in buildings and street furniture
Made using cement, sand and aggregate
Plywood
Used in furniture and construction
Made using wood veneers and resin
MDF
Used in furniture and interior cladding
Made with wood pulp and resin
Smart Materials
A material that exhibits a physical change from a change in an external stimuli
Thermochromic pigments
change colour when their temperature changes
This kind of material s usually found in baby products
Photochromic pigments
These pigments change their properties when exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light
These are used most commonly in colour shifting glasses to become more like sunglasses when outside
Polymorph
A polymer which becomes malleable when heated to around 62°C
When cooled it becomes hard enough to be drilled into making it good for modelling
Modern Materials
A material that has gone under engineering to improve any of the original material's properties
Graphene
The material is a single atom and 100 times stronger than steel
The material is only hypothetical because we are yet to manufacture it in large enough quantities to prove this
Nanomaterials
Tiny particles of 1 to 100 nanometres
Can be used in coatings on smartphone screens which can repel greasy fingerprints
Breathable fabrics
Fabrics designed to allow body moisture to evaporate away from the body, through the use of a breathable membrane laminated between layers of fabric, whilst still remaining waterproof
Used in things like Gore-Tex, Permatex and SympaTex
