The growth of bike-sharing schemes around the world
The original of idea
Started in a summer’s day in Amsterdam of 1965
They( the organization) belives Witte Fietsenplan(name of the scheme) was an answer to the perceived threats of air pollution and consumerism
They painted a small number of used bikes white
Distributed leaflets describing the dangers of cars and inviting people to use the white bikes
unlocked at various
locations around the city, so everyone can use it
The problems of the scheme
Luud Schimmelpennink, was heavily involved in the original scheme
The police were opposed to Provo’s initiatives and almost as soon as the white bikes were distributed around the city, they removed them
=> this was just the beginning.
It more serious when Schimmelpennink became a member of the Amsterdam city council two years later
Schimmelpennink seized this opportunity to the council
distribute 10,000 white bikes over the city
for everyone to use
Just cost the municipality only 10% of what it contributed to public transport per person per kilometre=> potential savings of biclycles
=> The council rejected the plan "They said that the
bicycle belongs to the past. They saw a glorious future for the car"
The issues of the scheme
’ The system, however, was prone to vandalism and theft
"there would always be a couple of bikes missing"
Postbank decided to abolish the chip
card because it's doesn't make profit
the business partner had lost interest;we would have needed to set up
another system
The success of the scheme
38% of all trips are made by bike and, along with
Copenhagen,
