sex gender and disabilities
the mountain; a metaphor
Comparing life to mountain , to the peak where the American dream lies, to the slopes where society has labeled the poor and lazy
"We are afraid; every time we look ahead we can find nothing remotely familiar or comfortable (1)
Everyone wants to get to the summit but those who are already there, set booby traps for those who want to move further up. (2)
"Piss on Pity"
People dehumanize those with disabilities each person has feelings and awarenes, pity can be sensed and can damage a person
"im not asking for pity, I am telling you about my impairments"
Disability vs Impairment
Disabled people are constantly put on as a show within our society, exploited
"They focus on disabled people 'overcoming' our disabilities, they reinforce the superiority of the non-disabled body and mind" (2)
People with disabilities are still human. constantly being objectified by society and focusing on their accomplishments that they overcome and not the ableism in our society.
Home is within the body
Many outside factors can hurt your home, trauma, discrimination, emotional, physical, sexual abuse etc
"The body as home, but only if it is understood that the bodies are never singular, but rather haunted, strengthened, underscored by other bodies"
Other bodies create identity and create home.
Freaks and queers
physically and mentally abused for something a person had no control over. being called slurs for simply living.
Number of labels inflicted on a group of people becomes hard, which words to accept and which to decline. Which words are perceived as slurs and which are liberating.
The acceptance of queer and cripple, but not freak. People have turned those words around to have a better connotation but why does freak have such a difficulty turning into the same?
" Nature did not make them into freaks. the show did, carefully consulting an exaggerated divide between normal and other sustained by rubes willing to pay to stare"
History of circus and freak shows to show off the "abnormal"
Stare at the non-disabled people as they were to gawk at the disabled.
