Malcolm: "Discovery is always a rape of the natural world." -Concept: Dangers of the Unknown- There are consequences to discovery.
Concept: Dangers of Technology -Theme: Relying solely on technology creates vulnerability.
-Park running solely on auxiliary power.
-Actually seeing a baby dinosaur (baby raptor)- failure of technology/human hubris
-Genaro lost radio (limited communication).
Malcolm: "What advances...all the time you spend..." (319). References to dryers, washing machines...etc. Still note improving with.
Malcolm only spouts philosophy (inaction)
Grant: "Irradiation is notoriously unreliable..." (315). -Overconfidence
Concept: Human vs. Nature Theme: Human impact with discovery. Malcolm asks Ellie about her not replanting and a dig; "only enough money to dig and not repair" (318-19).
Malcolm: "All major changes are like death..."(351).
Malcolm makes reference to "real-world" examples.
Huge Theme for the novel: Just because we can, should we?
Scientists and choices of what to use knowledge on. (lack of total control over results).
Karma and Hubris: Things will catch-up with you/Oversights will come back to haunt you/humankind.
Malcolm: "Do you have any idea how likely...any of us will get off the island alive." to Hammond (351).
Muldoon: "They can outrun the jeep..." (303). Lack of a plan to escape the dinosaurs should things go wrong.
Theme: Inaction is a type of action.
Concept: Dangers of Knowledge/Lack of Knowledge Theme: Compartmentalized knowledge leads to errors. Malcolm: "In the grand vision of science, hundreds of years old, the dream of total control dies in our century" (350-1).
Malcolm: "The scientific power is inherited wealth..." (343).
Who is at fault?
Hammond: being money driven and being a bully
Genarro: focused on money rather than the safety issues
Wu: For not standing up for his scientific principles?
Muldoon: Not adjusting the security/enclosures correctly/standing up to Hammond (339).
Nedry: Greed sets things in motion (computer shut-down, power systems, etc.)
Arnold: "He's alright, he's an engineer..." (319). -thintelligent thinking.
