Causes
The low clergy's lack of training
The church hierarchy did not care about the training of priests
this led to inappropriate behaviour

The majority of those at the top of the hierarchy did not respect the customs or morals that they preached.

These positions provided an income and economic rights, witch was a way of becoming rich
The sale of indulgences.
When the church needed money it sold indulgences
" it helped believers to be forgiven for their sins"
after this many peasant revolts occurred, they demanded for religious and economic reforms
The spread of the reformation
Ultricht Zwingli
he was a Swiss pastor who founded the Reformed Church in the city of Zurich
he proposed abolishing religious imagery and celibacy among priests.
John Calvin
he was a French theologian who spread a type of Protestantism from Geneva in Switzerland.
His beliefs were based on predestination, meaning that people were destined for salvation from birth (Calvinism)
Henry VIII
in 1534 he broke with the Catholic Church and the Act of Supremacy was passed
he appointed himself head of the Church of England ( Anglican Church)

95 Theses
in this book he criticises about the sale of indulgences and other bad practices .
he marked the beginning of the Protestant Reformation in 1517 by publishing 95 theses
Luthers main ideas:
faith and God's will.
basically this was the idea of salvation and forgiveness depending on faith and god's will
veneration saints and holy relics
rejection of the veneration of the Virgin Mary, saints and holy relics
Rejection of the sacraments, except for baptism and the Eucharist.
Free interpretation of the Bible.
anyone could read and interpret the Bible in their own way
Opposition to the Church
he did this by owning property and supporting the nobles taking over the Church's possessions

Luther is excommunicated and expelled from the Empire.

Luther translates the Bible into German.

Lutheranism spreads to Denmark and Norway.

Eradication of the Lutheran groups in Spain.
