Dispute is about: sovernity, territory over the Spratly chain of island that countries lay entire or partial claim over them

2013 - Philippnes took China to tribunal over SCS claims
International maritime tribunal found China was illegally claiming Scarborough Shoal and the Spratly Islands as territory
According to the Philippines, China’s ‘nine-dash line’ (which it uses to demarcate its territorial claims) is unlawful under the UNCLOS, to which both countries are signatories
China boycotted the proceedings, arguing that the court had no jurisdiction to try the case and that it would not accept its verdict.
