1.4. Characteristics of Language
1.4.1 language is a code ,fixed, inter-related pattern of speech (Appendix, SU1 Reader). Language has

1.3 Components of language
1.3.1 listening , speaking crucial for learning, time allocation for listening and speaking activities (English HP CAPS).
1.3.2 reading, phonics vital for grade 1-3, activities of shared reading, phonemic awareness, spelling (English HP CAPS).
must have shared reading exercises, phonics, group guided reading.
1.3.3 Handwriting 15 minutes per day of pre-writing to develop visual discrimination, hand-eye coordination , gross and fine motor skills (English HP CAPS).
1.3.4 Grade R children write using pictures, must be able to write own captions, construct one sentence by the middle of Grade R (English HL CAPS).
Teachers must give each child A5 book for personal dictionary
