WHAT IS IT?
inherited
blood clot disease
genetic alteration
formation of blood clots in larger veins
can also form clots that travel down veins and lodge in lungs
most common form of thrombophilia
most common in Caucasian US or Europeans
SYMPTOMS
first DVT or PE before 50yrs of age
recurring DVT or PE
having venous thrombosis in unusual areas of body
having DVT or PE right after or during pregnancy
unexplained pregnancy lost in 2nd or 3rd trimester
having DVT or PE and a strong family history
DIAGNOSIS
coagulation screening test
genetic testing (DNA analysis) of the F5 gene
using hormones and hormone replacement can increase chance of DVT or PE
TREATMENT
prescription of anticoagulants
reduction or elimination of clotting risk factors
