Strategies & Activities
Oral Retellings: Explanations students give in their own words of something they have heard or read. Students might retell a story they read or that was read to them
Songs & Chants: Songs can help students master the proper intonation of words and phrases, and chants or raps can help make learning new vocabulary and language structures easier
Oral presentations: "Show and Tell". Students show something cool they have brought from home, tell their classmates all about it, and answer questions about it.
Minimal pairs: "Pen/Pan" " He BIT the boy/ He HIT the boy".
Words or phrases differ by only one phoneme. Can help ELLs discriminate between words that may sound the same. Can also help with pronuniciation
When students are in situations where they must communicate with others and create comprehensible output, they may become aware of gaps in their developing language and may be pushed to pay more attention to input containing what they need to successfully communicate with others
