C2- The Periodic Table
History
-
Newlands
-
produced table called "law of octaves", but pattern only worked up to calcium
-
Mendleev
ordered using atomic mass, but switched elements to be based on properties of necessary
-
-
-
Different Groups
Group 1- Alkali metals
-
-
Trends
As you do down, the reactivity increases
as you go down, atom gets bigger; 1 electron in outer shell; further away from nucleus, weaker the ionic bond if protons and electrons; losing electron is easier
As you go down, m.p and b.p decreases
As you go down, density increases
Group 0- Noble gases
-
As you go down, boiling point increases
the atoms become larger; the intermolecular forces between the atoms become stronger; more energy is needed to overcome these forces
-
as you go down, density increases
Group 7
Trends
As you go down, the b.p and m.p increase
The bigger the atom, the stronger the bond; has to be hotter for stronger bonds to break
As you go down, the reactivity decreases
The bigger the atom, the further away from the nucleus and shielded by the inner electron shells it is
