Ruben Aburto Period 7
Anatomy of female reproductive structures
Vagina Conveys uterine secretions to outside of body; receives erect penis during sexual intercourse; provides a passageway for offspring during birth process
Uterus Protects and sustains embryo during pregnancy
Ovary Produces oocytes and female sex hormones
Uterine tube Conveys secondary oocyte toward uterus; site of fertilization; conveys developing embryo to uterus
Events of the female hormonal cycles
Estrogens: promote development of female secondary sexual characteristics as a female matures; this continues with menstrual cycles
Ovulation: triggered by a mid-cycle surge in LH; secondary oocyte & follicular fluid are released from the ovary
Following ovulation, follicular cells turn into a glandular corpus luteum, which secretes estrogen and progesterone
Progesterone causes endometrium to become more vascular, and uterine glands to secrete nutrients for a possible embryo
Anatomy of male reproductive structures
Testis Seminiferous tubules Produce sperm cells
Penis Conveys urine and semen to outside of body; inserted into vagina during sexual intercourse; the glans penis is richly supplied with sensory nerve endings associated with feelings of pleasure during sexual stimulation
Prostate gland Secretes a fluid that contains citrate, a nutrient for sperm
Bulbourethral gland Secretes fluid that lubricates end of penis
Major functions of the Reproductive system
Male system delivers sperm to female
Female system houses and nourishes developing embryo and
fetus
Methods and Classification of contraceptives
Coitus Interruptus: withdrawal of penis from vagina before ejaculation; not very effective; some sperm may reach vagina before ejaculation
Rhythm Method: abstinence from sexual intercourse around time of ovulation; difficult to determine time of ovulation; not effective
Disorders associated with the reproductive system
Many STIs have similar symptoms, such as fever, sores, blisters or rashes, lower abdominal pain, discharge, painful intercourse
Many STIs are silent or go unnoticed, especially in females
Hormones of the reproductive system
Male reproductive function is controlled by hormones secreted by the hypothalamus, anterior pituitary, and testes
2 groups of female sex hormones are produced by ovary, adrenal cortex, and placenta (during pregnancy): Estrogens and Progesterone
