Reproductive system Vannessa Flores p5
Major functions of the Reproductive system (male and female)
Anatomy of male reproductive structures
Corpus cavernous: located above penis
Urethra: goes from bladder to penis; secretes urine
Penis convey urine & penis to outside of body
Ductus Deferens : conveys sperm to ejactulatory duct
Scrotum: posterior to penis; protects & helps regulate temp of testis
bulbourethral gland: secretes fluid that lubricates end of penis
Testis located in scrotum
Epidemis: Goes from testes to ductus sperm becomes motile and developes
Prostate gland: located in the base of the urinary bladder, secretes a thin milky fluid that contains citrate (nutrient for sperm)
Ejaculatory duct: located in the prostates gland delivers sperm to urethra
Seminal vesicles: secretes an alkaline fluid containing nutrients that help regulate pH of semen
Anatomy of female reproductive structures
Perimetrium: outermost layer of uterus
Endometrium: innermost layer of uterus
vagina: birth canal
Fimbrae : on uterine tubes
Lumen of vagina : below cervix
labia majus: covers pubic symphysis: encloses & protects external organs
Labrium minimus: between labia major provides an opening for urethra and vagina
uterus Bends over urinary bladder, maintains development of embryo
Ovary: located in pelvis cavity produces sex hormones
Infundibulium: Above fimbrae: releases egg
Cervix: between uterus & lumen of vagina
Myometrium: middle layer of uterus
Uterine tube: leads from ovaries to uterus, site for fertilization
Hormones of the reproductive system (male and female)
Female
Androogens
: produce some changes at puberty
GnRH:
cause secretion of FSH & LH from the anterior pituitary
Estrogen
: Responsible for secondary sexual characteristics
Progesterone:
Completes the development of the uterus wall, promotes glycogen storage
FSH
: stimulates one egg to develope
LH:
spike to signal ovulation
male
Androgens: Male sex hormone
FSH: stimulates sertoli cells of seminferous tubules
Testosterone: Responsible for secondary male sexual characteristic
Lh: promotes development of interstitial cells
Events of the female hormonal cycles (be sure to include all categories)
Follicular cells produce and secrete estrogen (maintain secondary sex characteristics and cause endometrium to thicken
Pituitary releases surge of LH= ovulation
FSH stimulates maturation of dominant follicle
Follicular cells become corpus luteum celles (secretes estrogen and pro estrogen)
Anterior pituitary gland secretes FSH/LH
If secondary oocyte is not fertilized, corpus luteum degenerates & no longer secretes estrogen and progesterone
As the concentrations of estrogens and progestrogen decline blood vessels in the endometrium constict
Uterine lining disintergrates & sloughs off, producing a flow
Pituitary glands n longer inhibited & organ secrete FSH & LH
Cycle repeats
Disorders associated with the reproductive system (including STI’s)
Methods and Classification of contraceptives
Mechanical Barrier
: prevent sperm from entering vagina (ex. condoms, cervical cap, ect.)
Rhythm Method
: Abstinence from sex during ovulation ( not very effective)
Chemical Barrier
: contain spermicides ( more effective with condom) (ex. condoms, foams, jellies)
Contraceptive Implants
: implantation of ROD containing progesterone under skin in arm (3 years)
Combined Hormone Contraception
: Contain estrogen& progestins to prevent pregnancy (ex. chemical ring, oral contraception)
Injectable Contraception
: Injection of progesterone derivative prevent follicle maturation & ovulation ( works 3 months)
Contraceptives
Surgical
Steralization
Female
Effectiveness 76-99%
Side effects: pain & bleeding
Male
side effects pain and bleeding
Effectiveness 76-99%
Mechanical :
Internal condom: put into the vagina
External condoms: put over penis
Diaphram: put into vagina with spermicides
Behavior
Chemical
Injectables
shot in the arm or put under the skin
IUD
placed inside uterus
Pill
By mouth
Spermicides
Put into vagina
