OPTHALMIA NEONATRUM
CAUSATIVE AGENTS:
N. gonorrhoeae
:star:Most common cause of infection
Chlamydia trachomatis
:star:Took over as the most common single cause
Bacteria
:star:staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas and Haemophilus species and other Gram negative bacteria.

PHARMOCOTHERAPY:
Erythromycin
Erythromycin inhibits ribonucleic acid (RNA) ̶ dependent protein synthesis, possibly by stimulating dissociation of peptidyl transfer RNA (tRNA) from ribosomes. This inhibits bacterial growth
Tetracycline
This is a bacteriostatic derivative of polycyclic naphthalene carboxamide,it is an alternative for chlamydial infection
Penicillin G
It interferes with the synthesis of cell wall mucopeptide during active multiplication, resulting in bactericidal activity against susceptible microorganisms.

SIGN & SYMPTOMS:
SignsLids
Conjunctival features
- conjunctival oedema
- mucopurulent conjunctivitis – discharge may be profuse
in C. trachomatis infection. Danger of infection of
clinician when prising open lids
Corneal features
- cornea can be involved, especially in N. gonorrhoeae infection. This organism can pass through intact corneal epithelium. Perforation may occurs
Symptoms
- Rednes
- Swelling of lids
- discharge causes in gonococcal infection
Conclusion
Awareness of the perinatal implications, as well as routine Chlamydia screening in pregnant women, will result in safer health care for the mother and her baby. Treatment of any maternal infection prior to delivery can help to reduce the burden of this disease and the incidence of childhood blindness.
INTRO:
This is type of conjunctivitis that is seen in the neonatal period. this is also known as neonatal conjunctivitis. this condition gets transmitted during the vaginal delivery. due to the significant mobility of this disease preventive guild lines were issued in regard to antibiotic use in all newborns to prevent this.
