Wood Sources
Mature Timber
Timber is derived from hardwood and softwood trees that are of the correct age, often referred to as mature. A tree is classed as mature at the point where it will grow in a significant way but will generally maintain its shape and structure.
Maturation Times
Hardwoods and softwoods can take different times to mature. Softwoods take 10-15 years to mature, which makes them more desirable for future companies like IKEA.
Hardwoods take longer to mature but tend to look better due to the lack of knots and close grain structure. Oak is a prime example of a hardwood which is the choice of wood for Oak Furniture Land.

Seasoning Timber
Seasoning
Seasoning is the term used for wood that is dried so it can be used for different applications. There are two different methods for seasoning.

Wood Types
Softwoods are evergreen trees that do not shed their leaves in autumn. They take less time to nature and have looser grains. As well as this, they are also relatively cheaper than hardwoods and are therefore suitable for the budget DIY enthusiast.

Hardwoods are deciduous trees that shed their leaves in autumn. They take longer time to grow and mature than softwoods do but will gain more growth rings. Hardwoods also cost a lot more money than softwoods do as they are mostly dense. However, on some occasions, they are not very dense (e.g balsa wood). They can add value to furniture products but are tougher to sand and plane.

Stock Forms
-
Composite boards are man-made and therefore have enhanced qualities, including:
- Stronger
- More environmentally friendly
- Cheaper
- More durable
- Smoother
However. they can be considered 'cheap', which may not be desirable.
