Purpose-based Reading Strategies
Light Reading
light reading is used when reading for liesure
choose content that is interesting
skim over irrelevant passages
read at an unhurried pace
don't worry too much about concentration
become emotionally involved in the text
Intensive Reading
is incredibly thorough and cognitively demanding
use the scanning technique to find the main theme and structural elements of the text
re-read the text line-by-line and focus on comprehension, important key factors for analysing
write a short summary to test understanding
gives an accurate analysis of the text for better understanding
Scanning
is a limited activity in that you look exclusively for information that is relevant to your search.
figure out what exactly it is that you are looking for
work out the structure of the information being read
keep the image of the or information you are looking for and use your to guide your eye down the page that is likely to feature the information you are looking for
useful for finding information quickly
Skimming
is a quick way to find the main points of a text
before skimming a text, know what your purpose is and keep it in mind
check the title and introduction
look for subheadings or words in bold in the text that might provide you with relevant information
the last paragraph is likely to be a summary of the main text so read it carefully
useful if you want to review something you have already studied or read in-depth
Study/Critical Reading
