The play, Romeo and Juliet is relevant today as it highlights conflict in issues such as religion, family, politics and culture.
Religion
Europe was a traditionally Catholic society with a strong belief in damnation for mortal sin. Suicide and bigamy were both considered to be mortal sins.
-
Romeo and Juliet was set during a time of religious and political turmoil. Shakespeare was writing following ‘The Reformation’ and this was when England became a Protestant nation, having broken away from the control of the Catholic Church.
Family
-
Families can fight about religion, politics and beliefs.
-
-
Families often get caught up in small arguments and forget that they are family. I think that love will always prevail even though that may not be the case with Romeo and Juliet.
Politics
Romeo and Juliet highlights conflict in issues such as politics because both families have an ongoing feud because of politics such as money and power, both families are afraid they would lose money or be forced to compete over money and proper wealth.
Another reason is that since both families are well-known, rich and powerful, each family has their own private ties such as the Capulets. The capulets have ties to the government, that is why the prince took the Capulets side and ordered Romeo to be killed.
Culture

-
Cultures are powerful, yet they often go unnoticed, impacting conflict and conflict resolution in subtle ways.
In history, clashes of culture may have ended in colonization

Different Cultures have different values and beliefs, causing conflict
