middle English - 11th century = old English are Norman French -> French language of courts and English became prominent because of chaucer
early modern English - 15th century = printing press -> establishment of standard and pride in English (Shakespeare= 2,000 words)

present day English - 20th century = technology, travel and education -> global language
ASPECTS OF CHANGE
lexical= morphology, dying out and invention of words
semantcis= changing meanings -> pejoration (change for the worse) and amelioration (change for the best)

phonological= vowel shift, vocal fry, high rise intonation

STANDARDISATION
education= creating a standard of language used in education and teaching students how to spell and what to write

communication technology= creating a standard for communications so people are able to understand eachother
political correctness = correct way to speak means everyone should speak in the same way for effective communication
