capitalism- women are forced to sell their labour to survive and use their labour to support their family under the capitalist system
the family- not just an instrument for disciplining and subjecting women to capitalism but a place where men took refuge from alienation under a capitalist economy
Socialist Feminist- argued that women's oppression was the result of economic and cultural factors. She criticised the concept of marriage
She points out that the greatest advances for women have taken place after socialist revolutions. Neo liberal revolution did not offer ultimate liberation and little progress was actually made.

sex vs gender- 'one is not born, but rather becomes, a woman'

socialist- came to see that class struggle was not enough by itself to improve the position of women. she argued that women were not 'born' but 'made'- femininity is a cultural construct which is taught to women through socialisation.

sexual liberation: all heterosexual relationships are effectively political in a patriarchical society because they involve men exercising power over women. Need to have sexual liberation before other liberation.
Bell Hooks
emphasised that feminist theorising must take account of intersectionality and be approached from the lenses of gender, race and social class.
