Immigration Policy
Singapore's industrialization programme (Jurong Industrial Estate) created demand for more workers at construction sites, ship yard, factories.
Singapore’s immigration policy contributes to a greater diversity in Singapore. Currently, Singapore is experiencing an ageing population as well as a low birthrate, which means that there is a declining workforce. It is therefore, important for Singapore to adopt an open immigration policy in order to fulfil the manpower needs in order to sustain Singapore’s economy. Immigrants are able to apply for work easily, especially for higher-skilled jobs.
Leading to different passes and permits that haves different quota so that migrants can contribute to Singapore in different areas where they are needed

Migrants are attracted to the top-notch education quality in Singapore. They feel that it is a good place to settle their families here given that it meets their education needs. Thus, with the inflow of more migrants, they contributed to the diversity in Singapore.
Education system in Singapore is well recognized for its effectiveness and high standards. Public schools in Singapore are becoming more popular with foreigners. These schools accept international students. Tertiary institutions like polytechnics and universities like National Singapore University and Singapore Management University are also very popular among international students. Singapore’s education is viewed as world class and their qualification is recognized worldwide.
Socio-cultural Environment
Singapore’s socio-cultural environment contributes to a greater diversity in Singapore. One specific socio-cultural environment is the quality of education in Singapore. Singapore’s public schools have high standards and are especially strong in terms of Mathematics and Science. In addition to the primary and secondary schools, tertiary institutions such as polytechnics and universities also offer high quality education. They offer high standards of certification and a wage range of course from the Sciences, Engineering, Humanities, Arts, and vocational skills. There are 80 000 international students in Singapore in 2014.
The high quality of education that one can receive in Singapore is attractive for migrants and their children. This is because having an education in Singapore increases their job prospects and in turn, their quality of life. Hence, attracting/encouraging foreigners to migrate to Singapore. This leads to greater diversity in Singapore as migrants bring along their culture, values, ideas and experiences that are shared with the rest of the Singapore society.
Safe Environment
This ensures that the migrants coming into Singapore will feel confident and safe as they settle down with the families and communities. Safety and security are the main considerations when deciding on the country to work or live in. Thus, migrants who come into Singapore will feel safe and secure hence contributing to the diversity of Singapore.
Low crime rates and strict laws play a role in ensuring the level of safety in Singapore. Singapore is ranked second safest country in the world based on social order and security in 2014 by the World Justice Project. Foreigners and the supporting communities thrive when there is a safe environment.
Community Support
There is harmony in Singapore. The existence of communities to help foreigners to feel more at home in Singapore. For example, with many Japanese MNCs setting up operations in Singapore, many Japanese expatriates arrived. The Japanese community has been established near Liang Court and Clarke Quay Central due to the Japanese eateries and supermarkets. The Thai communities are located at the Golden Mile Complex along Beach Road.
With these immigrant communities in Singapore, they bring with them distinct national identities that include ethnic practices unique to their countries of origin. The multi-cultural environment and the respect practiced towards the diverse practices and religion makes them feel accepted and welcomed. Thus, with the inflow of more migrants, they contribute to the diversity in Singapore. Thus, Singapore provides a multi-cultural environment for everyone to be accepted which in turn attracted many foreigners into Singapore, hence increasing our diversity.
