Snowglobe Practical
Stokes Law: F=6πaηv. It is the force exerted on spherical objects within a viscous fluid, utilising very small Reynold numbers.
a represents the radius of the sphere that is travelling through the liquid. It is directly proportional to the drag force (F)
*π' represents the mathematical constant of the ratio of a circle's circumference and its diameter. It is a constant in the equation
v is the velocity of the sphere, which is the object that is travelling through the liquid. It is directly proportional to the drag force (F)
F represents the viscous drag force and is what is found from the question. Drag is a mechanical force that is generated from the contact and interaction between the fluid and the solid body
Reynold numbers
The ratio of inertial forces to viscous forces within a fluid which is subjected to relative internal movement due to different fluid velocities.
η represents the viscosity of the fluid. Viscosity is the resistance of a change of flow or shape. It is directly proportional to the drag force (F)
Snow globe
-
Objects: Any objects inside the snow globe can effect where the snow can fall and the length from start of fall to rest
-
Velocity of the 'snow'
Terminal Velocity is the state when a body has the 2 external forces that are acting upon become equal. The first force is the resistance or drag acting upon the body, with the second force being the weight. Once terminal velocity is reached, the object will continue to travel at the speed unless acted upon by an unbalance force, and will not continue to accelerate
Weight is determined by the formula W=mg. Weight is also the downwards force acting upon the object, the snow.
m = the mass of the object. This value is constant in the experiment, as the mass of the object will always be the same. It uses the units of kg.
-
W represents the downwards force and has the units of Newtons. It is directly proportional to both m and g
The Problem:: Manufacturers of snow globes believe that one of the most important qualities of them is that the snow falls slowly.
To make the snow fall slowly, a multitude of factors could be changed or altered
