Laiba Khan (Health Care
Law)
Gender (Female)
Face discrimination due to the fact that I am a woman
Especially in policy and law, the opinions of women are overthrown by those of men
Clients may prefer men due to their dominating and intimidating stance to fight for them
Not taken seriously
Have to work even harder than men just to be on the same playing field
Disability
fear of my ADHD causing me to be seen as inferior, dumb or stupid in contrast to other coworkers or students
Stigma around ADHD that causes employers to doubt my abilities
My own struggles with mental health preventing me from performing to the best of my ability some days, as it gets in the way of my academics and other relationships
Quickening the rate at which I burnout. Having ADHD forces me to have to focus even harder and for longer periods than I naturally can, this is a huge struggle daily
Race
As a visible minority (Pakistani and a Muslim), my race causes me to face discrimination in the workforce and education system
Despite being Canadian born, people will still assume I am an immigrant and do not know as much as my White counterparts.
Even now, at the age of 18, I have gotten comments on how my english is so good and how well I communicate. Although this is seen as a compliment, it is actually somewhat backhanded because people immediately assume I would have an accent or broken english due to my skin colour, this results in prejudice in school, workforce and with peers
Some clients prefer to not have a South Asian person representing them, this is the same in healthcare, so racism is seen on multiple levels
This week's lecture readings talked about overrepresenation of Brown people in health care and how white people have begun to see this as us stealing their rightful positions. This type of judgement and ideologies can cause tension, which results in poor collaboration and dehumanization. As well as feelings of being an outcast
Income (Family)
Law school is quite expensive and so coming from a lower-middle class family, I will probably need to work during undergrad or find ways to attain bursaries/ scholarships to afford schooling
Cannot really afford to take the LSATS more than a few times.
Studying abroad may not also be ideal due to its expenses
