5 stages of L2 acquisition
Intermediate fluency
Early Production
Students have limited comprehension and speak in one or two-word responses. Responds to their name.
e.g. hello, yes, no
Students form full sentences and engage in conversations with few grammatical errors
Improved understanding of words and speaks in short phrases
Student makes grammatical and pronunciation errors
Speech Emergence
e.g. can I go to the rain
Begins to read and write in their second language
Stage 1
student listens and absorb information
minimal verbal output and repeats words, does not have real understanding
Pre-production (receptive)
e.g. mama, dada, tata. ooh, aah
Advanced fluency
The student will feel as comfortable in L2 as their native language
e.g. Today, I had a good day at school.
The learner needs to speak and write in a second language to become fluent.
