6.3 Air Pollution
-
-
Trophospheric Ozone
Effects
-
-
Damage to material - rubber, plastics, fabrics
Formation of
NO (nitric oxide) reacts with oxygen to form NO2 (nitrogen oxide). When NO2 absorbs sunlight, it breaks into NO and O (oxygen). The O reacts with other O atoms to form O3 (ozone).
Particulates
Burning most organic materials/fossil fuels release small particles of carbon referred to as particulates or PM10.

6.4 Acid Deposition
Acidity
refers to the level of hydrogen ions present in a substance and is expressed as pH. pH: 0 < acidic < 7 < alkaline < 14
Acid deposition usually has a pH < 5 as it includes primary pollutants like sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides, forming secondary pollutants of sulphuric acid and nitric acid
