The Model:
1. Precontemplation
What happens? - Not thinking about changing addictive behaviour any time soon, denial and demotivation

2. Contemplation
What happens? - Thinking about changing behaviour in next 6 months, aware of costs and benefits

3. Preparation
What happens? - Addict believes benefits outweigh the costs, decides to change in next month

5. Maintenance
What happens? - Person has maintained their behaviour change for more than 6 months, focus on preventing relapse

6. Termination
Abstinence becomes automatic, stage may be urealistic - prolonging maintenance may be appropriate and dealing with relapse when it happens
