networking, Network Interface Card (NIC) - Coggle Diagram
networking
Network hardware
-
A router or switch, which provides access
to a local area network
-
Modem
-
Hub
-
Packets sent to a hub are sent to every other computer connected to the hub. This is known as a broadcast. Computers that receive a packet not intended for them will ignore it.
Router
A router is a hardware device that allows you to connect several computers and other devices to a single Internet connection, in a home network. Connects different networks together
-
-
-
Wireless access point
A wireless Access Point (AP) is a device that allows wireless devices to connect to a wired network using a wireless standard such as Wi-Fi
Switch
A switch is an interconnecting device that connects two or more devices together and helps in solving the issue of data collisions
topologies
-
-
Partial mesh network
-
Partial mesh network model usually used, often in conjunction with star topologies to create larger networks
Wireless mesh network
Wireless mesh networks have enormous potential to provide Wi-Fi solutions for entire organizations, cities or even countries
-
IP address and URL + DNS
every network in the world has a separate, unique
IP address. Internet Protocol address. A logical address and unique identifier of a device on a network.
A typical URL contains:
the protocol to be used (i.e. HTTP, FTP),
the domain name or IP address,
-
A DNS server translates the website names that we use in a browser into IP addresses The system technology allows you to type a name such as google.co.uk into your web browser and translates the web address google.co.uk into an IP address. Servers maintain a database of registered domain names and matching IP addresses.
A web page’s complete address, used to direct a browser to a specific page. Every file on the WWW will have a URL.
Web hosting and server
-
A web server can, in general, contain one or more websites.
The primary function of a web server is to store, process and deliver web pages to clients
Web clients send requests for web pages to web servers. Web servers process the incoming network requests over HTTP, and several other related protocols.

network types
client - server network
-
-
-
-
disadvantages
-
-
if server fails, the network will fail
-
-
peer - to - peer
no server and every computer is treated as a equal, each PC is referred to as a peer
-
advantages
-
-
individual computers can share a printer, router, modem, and other hardware
-
-
-
MAC address
A Media Access Control (MAC) address is assigned to each Network Interface Card (NIC) by the manufacturer. Set in hardware and doesn’t change
Domains names
You have to have a domain name so your website can be found on the Internet. The domain name is essentially your website’s Internet address
Cloud computing
the delivery of computing services – servers, storage, databases, networking, software, analytics and more – over the Internet (“the cloud”).
