I want to conserve Peranakan shophouses
WHAT?
It has diverse elements from Chinese, Malay and Indian. One of the special feature is the cuisine as strong Malay and Indonesian influences, which can be seen in the use of rempah (spices) and coconut milk. The clothing has flora motifs and vibrant colours.
The business and home museums that are located at the shophouses will be removed, they will have no space to display and spread Peranakan culture.
To buy one of the shophouses, it cost S$ 18,888,888. It is expensive as it is a cultural heritage. Another shophouse at Emerald Hill conservation area, cost S$ 14,500,000.
WHO?
Those who need the cultural heritage site to sell their products by using it to advertise. By perserving, they will benefit. The museums will also benefit by having exclusivity by having it perserve.
People who are keen on learning about their past, and what their ancestors did to contribute to Singapore.
Who might use the existing Heritage District buildings?
Those who are doing museusm guides and those who have businesses there profiting from the cultural heritage to sell their goods such as restaurants and souvenir shops.
WHERE?
Where will local heritage be perserved and showcased?
At the cultural heritage site at Katong and Joo Chiat. There are also museums that showcase Peranakan artefacts.
WHY?
Why is it important to preserve cultural heritage?
if we destroy the buildings ,we would destroy the evidence of whatever greatness , cultural practices , religion existed. It was not an easy task to win the confidence of the people. In my opinion , cultural heritage sites should never be removed / destroyed. cultural heritage allows people to have a better understanding of their past ; ancestors. This is an important contributing factor to one's life. and may change their perspective. Thus cultural heritage is important to many and should not be removed
HOW?
How will preserving local heritage influence Singapore's evolving culture and society?
To foster a sense of belonging by having a deeper understanding of our cultures and heritage. It will establish national, community and personal idenities.
How will introduce a new shopping mall influence Singapore's evolving culture and society?
Replacing the Peranakan shophouses with a new shopping mall will hinder and prevent Peranakans from learning heritage and culture.
How might disappearing cultures affect later generations?
The later generations will forget their roots and lose touch with their culture. Thousands years olds of customs and traditions.
