Paper 2 response - Deekshith and Avi
Discuss the ways that writers have presented characters that feel alienated from their society in two of the works you have studied. (TFA and DoS)
Symbols in TFA:
Symbols in DoS: refrigerator as a symbol for foreshadowing; rubber hose as a symbol to lure Willy into committing an irreversible mistake; i.e. suicide
Thesis statement: Mention about the symbols the writers have used to show how the characters have felt alienated from their society
Denial:
Techniques: Symbolism, forshadows
At end the clan members refuse to touch the dead body of okonkwo
Dos:
Characterization: toxic masculinity; willy's brother being successful unlike willy; mindset that committing suicide is the only way to escape problems in their lives; okonkwo's fierce and aggressive personality relating to male dominance
Toxic masculinity: growing yams being a man's job; fire representing a man's fierce and relatively dominating personality
Locusts: representing arrival of missionaries, hence suggesting the start of clan falling apart; locusts carrying benefits and drawbacks in ch.7 (celebrating and consuming the locusts while resenting the consequences of the same later in the story
Use Characterization as a technique and not as a lens
Fear of failure
Characterization, symbolism, foreshadowing
TFA: Fear of becoming like his father and fear of unsuccessful children, Fear of unacceptance
DOS:
lack of order: when society doesn't function the way it should, leading to disorder; the clan's mechanism during the missionaries' arrival; willy not being a successful salesman due to insecurities and comparison.
Dos symbols: symbolism(Refrigerator-American dream)
Tfa symbols: okonkwo getting exiled for killing someone during the week of peace; seeing his clansmen embrace the missionaries' culture and being unable to do protect his own;
Techniques used: Symbols and foreshadowing
