Different Reading Strategies & Techniques
1- Light Reading
It is content that a person chooses to read. For example- an interesting book that they are reading for leisure purposes.
Not intending to fully concentrate. Person also sometimes skips through the unimportant and boring parts of the book.
Usually used for leisure and is read at a slower pace.
2-Scanning
You don't spend time reading every sentence, merely looking for the information that is relevant.
It is a limited reading approach where a person looks for information that is only relevant for a specific thing. For example- an assignment.
It is not a thorough reading technique and is used for finding specific information.
3-skimming
A quick way at finding the main idea of a text, can be used for recapping your knowledge that you have already learnt to refresh your memory to ensure you haven't forgotten anything. Or if you want to get a brief idea of what the text is about.
It should not be used as a study technique.
4- Intensive Reading
It is a thorough reading technique, it involves a lot of concentration and retention of information over a long period of time
It is important in analyzing pieces of writing, for example poems, texts or parts of a play.
Very important and used in prescribed reading and poetry. used to look for figurative language, emotive language, tone
Uses alot of concentration to look for specific things. Your vocabulary and literal and figurative meanings of things plays a huge part.
5-Study/Critical reading
Usually used the most often, and is eminent for studying.
Critical reading helps you to read deeper than the surface of the information, not just learn what is on the page. But, to understand and to be able to ask questions. And to develop critical reading skills.
It is used for examining and critiquing texts
Reading deeper into things helps you to understand and remember things more than just reading at the surface. Helping to improve your chances of success.
