What evidence is there for Climate Change?
Ice Cores
Provide direct information about how greenhouse gas concentrations have changed over the years
They also prove that the climate can change abruptly - the ice ages for example
Early spring
In recent years there have been signs of a seasonal shift - spring arrives earlier and winters tend to be less severe.
Medieval Paintings
Not very reliable
paintings might not be accurate
may be exaggerated just to make the painting look better
Some scientists study sunsets from these paintings to see how they have changed.
Tree Rings
Tree rings helps us to define what the weather has been like in the past years. The light-colored rings represent wood that grew in the spring and early summer, while the dark rings represent wood that grew in the late summer and fall.
In warm and wet years the tree rings usally grows wider but when it is cold and dry the tree ring normally growes thiner.
With all this inforamtion scientist can then compare local measurements of temperature and precipitation from the nearest weather station with modern trees.
Glaciers melting-Over the past 50 to 100 years, photographic evidence has shown that the world's glaciers have been melting, which has caused them to retreat. The increase in global temperatures is causing glaciers to disappear and is increasing the melting of sea ice in the Arctic.
thermomoter readings -scientists have found that the Earth’s average surface air temperature has increased by around 1°C since the year 1900
Global Tempature Data
Royal Society
Scientists have determined that, when all human and natural factors are considered, Earth’s climate balance has been altered towards warming, with the biggest contributor being increases in CO2.
The world's oldest independent scientific academy, dedicated to promoting excellence in science.
