Surface structures

- how you express with the help of words & sentences
Deep structure
concerns with meaning (concepts, thoughts, meaning)

Example A:
(1) I bought colorful clothes. (active)
(2) Colorful clothes bought by me. (passive)
(1) & (2) are two different surface structures
but they mean exactly the same thing --> same deep structure
Example B:
Speaking to you as an intelligent person
There are 2 different deep structures
(1) I think of you as an intelligent person.
OR (2) I think of myself as an intelligent person who is speaking to you.
